Movie Monday: The Long, Long Trailer (1954)

If you know me then you know how much I love the television show I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz are one of the best comedy duos of all time, in my opinion. You can imagine my excitement when I found out that the film The Long, Long Trailer starred this iconic couple! This whole film is a series of laugh-out-loud moments, and one of my personal favorite films. That is why I am so excited to be reviewing it today!

Growing up I always admired the funny ladies of Old Hollywood. From Bewitched to I Love Lucy, there was no shortage of comedic leading ladies to look up to! Although I will never be as funny as Lucille Ball, her timing and wit is something I aspire to obtain when trying my hand at comedy in real life.

One of the best parts of The Long, Long Trailer is that it is like an extension of the I Love Lucy Show! The only exception is that the film is centered around one of Lucy’s gimmicks instead of there being number of them. But the perfect balance between sweet moments between Lucy and Desi, and jokes is struck once again!

Throughout my years of studying Lucille Ball’s comedy, I have noticed that so much of it revolves around small gestures/moments. For example, in The Long, Long Trailer when Lucy decides to cook while Desi drives sounds like a good idea until it isn’t. This experiment ends in disaster, and one messy kitchen! Another hilarious moment in this movie is when Lucy tries (tries being the key word here) to help Desi back that long trailer into a driveway. It isn’t hard to imagine that it too ended in disaster.

All of this goes to show the genius that went into the jokes written in both the I Love Lucy show and The Long, Long Trailer. Although the punchlines seem simple and ordinary, we must also remember how groundbreaking this comedic style was for its time era. Even to this day it seems like comedy still reflects this influential duo.

Much Love,

Sarah
