Movie Monday: Magnificent Obsession (1954)

This week’s Movie Monday is dedicated to the film Magnificent Obsession starring Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman. Not only is this film a love story, it also serves as a drama that will have as many twist and turns as your favorite romance novel.

The first thing I want to say about this movie Magnificent Obsession is that the fashion is absolutely FABULOUS! I love the style of the 1950s anyway, but the outfits that are sporty throughout this film are so incredibly timeless and flattering! Besides the stunning costumes, the hair and makeup in this movie were also very classy. I just love the fashion of this time era!

So now that I have my love for the style that is worn in this movie, Magnificent Obsession had a very unique storyline. We start out thinking this will be a relatively simple love story, but I found that the film quickly turned dramatic. After becoming a widow thanks to Rock Hudson’s character, Jane Wyman ends up being blinded by Hudson too! Despite having completely changed her life, Hudson does not give up on pursuing a romantic relationship with Wyman.

Without giving up the ending, I will just jump to the conclusion Magnificent Obsession left me with. This was one wild movie! Maybe it is my more modern perspective, but I did not particularly care for the way Rock Hudson’s character was so persistent over Jane Wyman. It was even more mind blowing to me that Jane Wyman’s character would even consider him to be a potential love interest after all that had happened! But I guess it was a different time era when this film was made.

The acting was really impeccable, as it should be! Both Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson are very talented so I would expect nothing less from either of them. However, I will say that I think Rock Hudson was better paired with Doris Day. But this was still a pretty decent duo for the very dramatic story they were apart of.

If you are looking to take you mind off of current world events and become distracted by a crazy love story, Magnificent Obsession would be the perfect film for you to watch. If you want to watch something a little less mind boggling, then maybe reach for another classic film.

Much Love,

Sarah
