Movie Monday: How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)

One of the best girl squad films of all time has to be How to Marry a Millionaire! This film is also one of my favorites because of the beautiful fashion we see.

How to Marry a Millionaire is a movie that capitalizes on the color film era using fashion! These leading ladies in this film are department store models, and we see some truly beautiful designs. Not only are the colors striking, but the shape of each design are a mix of luxurious and simple. All of the looks we see in How to Marry a Millionaire are very much of the 1950’s time!

Despite the storyline of this film being slightly problematic, there is a fair amount of comedy within this film. How to Marry a Millionaire seems to make light of how ridiculous the whole idea and setting out to search for a husband only for his wealth.

Leading the way we see three competent and independent women who are living out there lives together in New York City. Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable, and Marilyn Monroe all live in a surprisingly spacious apartment together but they can barely afford it. Hence the search for rich husbands begins.

Although at first the storyline appears to be problematic (at least by today’s standards), in the end we see that their search leads them to love not wealth and that is such a sweet ending in my option. How to Marry a Millionaire may not be the best movie ever made, but it holds its own in a lot of ways. Especially in the fashion stakes!

Much Love,

Sarah
