Movie Monday: Blithe Spirit (1945)

In keeping with the spirit of Halloween, today’s Movie Monday is all about one highly underrated technicolor film that is absolutely perfect for this time of the year. I’m reviewing the classic film Blithe Spirit from 1945!

Something about Blithe Spirit seems to stick to the audience watching whether that be via this film or on the stage. Maybe it is the acting or maybe it is because of the science fiction storyline. I like to think it is because of the hint of comedy this particular story likes to sprinkle into the character’s personalities.

Kay Hammond is a real highlight for me in this movie! The irony is that her character serves as the real soul of the entire plot, and if you have seen Blithe Spirit before you will get the joke ;). However, it is not just her comedic timing that makes her role in Blithe Spirit memorable, it is also her chemistry with Rex Harrison. Together they convince you that they really were married and that takes true talent when it comes to acting!

Like I mentioned earlier, Blithe Spirit has a long and varied history with stage performances. Therefore, I know that this film isn’t just a classic because of the acting featured in this movie. More than anything else, it is the storyline of this film that makes it both a classic and somehow very relevant even to this day. Above all, it is the storyline that makes people remember these characters and their humor.

Another reason this movie is such a perfect fit for Halloween is because it takes a different route when portraying ghosts! Most of us think of a white bed sheet with two holes cut out for your eyes to see when thinking of ghost costuming. However, I like how Blithe Spirit took full advantage of the technology of that time era, and utilized a bright green color for the signal of a ghost. Not only is this shade more flattering, it is also very distinct from the conventional idea of what a ghost should look like.

Blithe Spirit is yet another great film for the faint of heart! If you are looking for a movie to watch this Halloween that will provide you with a few laughs, Blithe Spirit is the film for you!

Much Love,

Sarah
