What I Wore in Rome Italy
The whirlwind trip to Rome, Italy, has come and gone. There were so many amazing aspects to this particular trip that made it very unique, but I will cover all of that in the day-by-day detailed blog posts I will publish very soon! Today I want to focus on the outfits that I wore and the clothing items I put a lot of faith in to keep all of my travel photos timeless.
Since the trip I took to Rome was in January, I had to really balance the whole “It’s winter!” aspect of the weather along with the “I don’t want these travel photos to be THAT dated looking.” So, there were layers but not too many, accessories, and comfortable shoes.
I brought one coat with me and that was my trusty peacoat! This style of coat is not uncommon for Italians to wear in the winter since their version of cold weather feels a lot more like a fall day in the Midwest, where I am from. Actually, in the days I spent exploring Rome, I saw both men and women wearing peacoats so I felt like a local.
Another consistent of my Roma wardrobe was my shoes. There are quite a few cobblestone streets in Rome so wearing comfortable shoes is a MUST! That means high heeled ankle boots or wedges in the summer would not be the best idea. If you plan on doing all of the touristy things there are to do in Rome, wear a reliable pair of sneakers!
With those two staples within my Roma wardrobe, I was able to change up my accessories and sweaters to go along with the dark coat that I wore. The overall color scheme I was going for with this trip is neutrals and camel colors. These tones also act as a great contrast to the darker colors of my accessories and the peacoat.
That was the general layout of how I thought the fashion should be handled on this trip. There are a couple of items that I think are timeless and are specifically perfect for a wintertime trip to Rome.
The Cadet Hat
I wore my absolute favorite cadet hat for one of the three days that I was in Rome, but I thought it worked out so much better than what I even anticipated! The Italians wear cadet hats too, and I saw a lot of them wearing the hat in their own stylish ways as we roamed the streets of Rome. This hat can be worn with multiple looks, but I think it works really well with the dark coat and a light colored sweater.
Earmuffs
Another item that was brought along for this trip since it was January was earmuffs! Typically, earmuffs are not my go-to item for winter apparel since Midwest winters are pretty brutal and just wearing earmuffs are not going to be enough. But Rome, Italy, is absolutely beautiful even in January and it was just right to wear earmuffs in that particular weather.
Other that those two items, you can really work an entire Italy inspired travel wardrobe. You already know what my goal was and what look I was going for, but I do want to add that the time of year you decide to visit Italy will always influence the look you are going for. In the summer you might add a lot more color and print, but this was my winter edition of a Roman tourist.
I will be writing blog posts for every day I was in Rome full of photos that I haven’t shared anywhere else yet so stay tuned for that! Hopefully this blog post was a fun little glimpse at what Rome was like and the fashion you might see there.
Much Love,
Sarah
