Classic Cinema,  What I'm Wearing

Rhoda Morgenstern’s Style

I don’t know about you, but I love it when television shows or films use fashion to speak volumes about a character. It helps set the mood whether that be sadness, fear, joy, or excitement. Style can also be used to display the deterioration or growing of one character’s confidence. That growth of confidence and use of fashion is exactly what we saw from the one and only Rhoda Morganstern!

When we were first introduced to Rhoda on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, she was considered the fat (even though she was not and looked perfectly fine) loser friend. But we were told that she was gradually losing weight and getting her life together. Audiences were introduced to her mother and told more about why she moved to Minneapolis from New York in the first place.

While this transformation took place right in front of our eyes, we didn’t know it but Rhoda was also finding her voice. Not her speaking voice, but the one that shines from the inside out, her inner voice. We can see this as she slowly discovers what her style is and starts wearing more trendy pieces.

Most of the outfits we saw Rhoda wear  early on included sweatpants and loose fitting dresses. Rhoda showed her lack of confidence and constantly compared herself to Mary who she deemed perfect. But that all changed rather quickly. Although Rhoda only appeared in the first four seasons of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the change in her style rapidly excelled until the day she left for her own spin-off show Rhoda.

Rhoda added the rainbow of colors to her wardrobe and wore them all beautifully! She also sported more heels, fitted ensembles, and those iconic headscarves! It all worked well with Rhoda’s new found confidence, she even moved back to New York and crafted yet another new life for herself there with family.

If you are looking to take some style inspiration from Rhoda, start a nice collection of scarves. These versatile pieces of fabric can be tied around your head like how Rhoda often styled her’s or you can wear it around your neck on colder days to stay warm! Be sure to keep your wardrobe colorful, too! After Rhoda expanded in confidence she never wore something dreary or drab.

Be sure to also invest in long skirts that will give you the bohemian vibes. If there was anything Rhoda Morgenstern loved wearing most it was the free spirited look in fashion! Also, don’t be afraid to play around with prints particularly florals.

Much Love,

Sarah
