Movie Monday: The Fly (1958)

It’s hard to believe it, but a full year has gone by since we last spent the entire month of October’s Movie Mondays reviewing Halloween appropriate films. However, it has been a full year, and it is time to get the Halloween theme started up yet again!

The film that is being reviewed for this Movie Monday is a science fiction movie that is a very good choice for Halloween. The Fly (1958) is one film that has lived on in popular culture and it has been reference in many other creations. But we are going back to the very original version with this review.

Personally, I believe that The Fly is one of the most creative science fiction classic films. The idea that a scientist would want to create a device that could transport objects or people and, ultimately, have this machine malfunction isn’t what makes this film creative. Instead, it is the consequences of creating a device like that at all that makes The Fly such an innovative movie.

I can’t help but feel like a lot of alien themed modern movies take inspiration from The Fly. Just think about all of the times we have seen technology intertwined within the storyline of a film. Now, it is almost a necessity to have technology interacting with the overall plot in science fiction films. In that respect, The Fly paved the way for the movies we watch today.

Although she is not as recognized as Vincent Price for her role in this film, I think the real star of The Fly is Patricia Owens. She pulled off the role as Helene Delambre better than another more easily recognized actress could have. For instance, if someone like Bette Davis were to have starred in this role, the focus would have shifted from this story about a man/fly to Davis. However, with Owens the true storyline of The Fly shines through!

If you are looking for a good not-so-scary film to watch this Halloween, The Fly might be the perfect movie for you! Who knows, you may even recognize some of the moments that this movie has added into popular cultural.

Much Love,

Sarah
