Movie Monday: Lover Come Back (1961)

One of my favorite Rock Hudson and Doris Day films is definitely Lover Come Back! Maybe it is the nostalgia of what was leftover by the 1950’s or the fact that this film centers around two professionals in the advertising business, the major I am currently studying. Whatever the reason, this goofy romantic comedy goes down in the books right next to When Harry Met Sally on my list of all-time greatest films!

Lover Come Back is a great example of the kind of tried and true friendship Hudson and Day had in real life. Hudson trusted Day’s comedic timing in each film they starred in together and ultimately with his career! They were only ever in three movies together, but the kind of bond they created on set gave them a friendship for a lifetime.

This film was made in the golden age of advertising, that is why the careers chosen for these characters was perfect for the early 60’s. Each of the films Hudson and Day starred in together it would seem the story would revolve around something that could be considered a sort of battle of the sexes. Lover Come Back was no exception to this, the whole plot is centered around who will win an, albeit fake, advertising account. In my opinion, this is the film where Rock Hudson displays his comedic abilities best.

From where we are today, you probably would not consider Lover Come Back a risqué film, but in 1961 it was a wild reach for the movie industry! Doris Day was very adamant that it be made somewhat more wholesome for viewers, though. Day insisted that the scene where her and Hudson’s character end up drunk and in bed together that their character get hitched beforehand.

One thing you can always count on in Doris Day films is some fabulous fashion! Day knew how to dress, and her timeless attire can be witnessed throughout every film she is in. The series of hats in this film is a dream come true for someone look for a little bad hair day inspiration! Not to mention the unforgettable suits and sequined dresses she wore throughout Lover Come Back!

The color of this film may make Day’s outfits pop on the screen, but it is no doubt the incredible talent and the natural chemistry Doris Day had with Rock Hudson that makes Lover Come Back an instant classic.

Much Love,

Sarah
