Movie Monday: His Girl Friday (1940)
Is there anything more fitting for April Fool’s Day than a good comedy? I don’t think so! That is why for this Movie Monday I am reviewing the hilarious comedy His Girl Friday!
This fasting talking and witty film can be pretty hard to keep up with sometimes. If you are not paying close attention then you might miss some of the jokes being thrown everywhere in His Girl Friday. But when you do pay attention, man is this film hilarious!
The characterization of having these newspaper journalists speak in such a fast manner feels so fitting. Realistically, I don’t think anyone could constantly roll out the sentences that these two do, but that just goes to show how talented Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell were as actors. They were able to keep up with each other and never miss a beat. See what I did there. A beat. Because they are reporters ;).
Anyway, Cary Grant is in one of his best roles in his career. His Girl Friday was a nice mix between funny and debonair. In many of Grant’s films he would be one of the other, but in this movie Grant pulls off both perfectly! Unlike many of his other comedies he is not the over the top awkward type. This was a different kind of comedy for him and he nailed it!
Nobody could have kept up with Grant in His Girl Friday like Rosalind Russell did! She was perfectly cast in this film as his estranged ex-wife who is still secretly in love with him. Russell was the perfect person to pull off the balance of sophisticated and funny, as well. She spoke just as fast as her males co-star and no joke flew over her head. Rosalind Russell was impeccable in this film and no one would have been a better fit, in my opinion.
I can’t let this Movie Monday be over until I discuss Rosalind Russell’s fashion in His Girl Friday! Pinstripes are one of my guilty pleasures when it comes to fashion, let me just put that out there first. The iconic and timeless pinstripes suits that Russell wears in this films ranks in within my top ten favorite film outfits of all time! Add in the fact that she wears interesting hats and understated yet pretty blouses with these suits makes me envious of her wardrobe. I couldn’t think of a better way to dress a sharp journalist like her!
Much Love,
Sarah
