• Movie Monday: Monkey Business (1952)

It’s time to take a moment to laugh and celebrate a comedy this Movie Monday! If there is anyone who can master classic film comedy it is definitely Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers! Monkey Business is a funny and adorable film from what could be expressed as the typical 50’s style comedy. In Monkey Business Grant brings back the coke bottle glasses he wore in Bringing Up Baby and his comedic skills. This isn’t the same style of comedy he used in some other movies, though, like Arsenic and Old Lace. Monkey Business shows us an older more mature side of Cary Grant until it doesn’t and everything just begins…

  • Movie Monday: Boomtown (1940)

Boomtown is one of those movies that you watch without expectations and then suddenly it ranks within you list of favorite movies to watch! The story in this film is as timeless any other, and the acting is superb. This Movie Monday I will be reviewing this classic that has quickly become one of my favorites! Before watching Boomtown, I had never seen Spencer Tracy star in a film before. It wasn’t until see this movie that I realized just how talented this man was as an actor. The way he captures a rather simple, sometimes hard luck guy is as timeless as this film. He balanced out Clark Gables…

  • Movie Monday: How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)

One of the best girl squad films of all time has to be How to Marry a Millionaire! This film is also one of my favorites because of the beautiful fashion we see. How to Marry a Millionaire is a movie that capitalizes on the color film era using fashion! These leading ladies in this film are department store models, and we see some truly beautiful designs. Not only are the colors striking, but the shape of each design are a mix of luxurious and simple. All of the looks we see in How to Marry a Millionaire are very much of the 1950’s time! Despite the storyline of this…

  • Movie Monday: Dark Passage (1947)

A drama that has stood the test of time is Dark Passage! This one of the iconic Bogie and Bacall films, and an intense one at that. All of these elements are the reason why Dark Passage is such a perfect fit for Movie Monday! One of the best aspects of Dark Passage is the cinematography choices they made. A large portion of this film is viewed from Humphrey Bogart’s point of view. Everything is seen through his eyes and from his perspective. This was what initially drew me into this movie. The artistic choice to not show the leading man’s face was a bold move. Eventually Bogart does show…

  • Movie Monday: Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)

Today for Movie Monday I am reviewing yet another Frank Capra classic – Mr. Deeds Goes to Town. Like Meet John Doe, Capra’s leading man in this movie is Gary Coopers. However this film replaces Barbara Stanwyck with the timeless actress Jean Arthur. Like in many (if not all) of Frank Capra’s films, we see an ordinary man be put into extraordinary situations. When all hope is lost, it is the will of the people that wins out. This, in my opinion, is a very American way of thinking. The idea that one man can make such a large impact on the lives of others around him all while simultaneously…

  • Movie Monday: Meet John Doe (1941)

Recently, I watched the film Meet John Doe for the first time and it instantly became one of my favorites! Plus, can you ever really go wrong with an inspirational Frank Capra film? Let’s review this classic! I find that Frank Capra films are chock full of symbolism and inspiration. Between Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Capra was never short of holding the “American Dream” in high esteem. Something about this film in particular, however, shows just how important the people are. The collective empowerment of how when looking out for one another you can really make a wonderful impact is one of the…

  • Movie Monday: Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948)

Today, I wanted to review one of my favorite comedies! Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is a Cary Grant and Myrna Loy classic! Watching this movie I always get a good laugh so I thought it was time we share a laugh together! Nobody can play a humdrum, miserable man like Cary Grant! I’m not trying to say he is a boring actor, anyone who has seen his films should know he definitely is not, but I am saying that this man is talented. Naturally, Grant has a lot of swagger to how he goes about his business so when he is casted in films like this one he…

  • Movie Monday: Harvey (1950)

I haven’t done many reviews of James Stewart’s classic films, but that is about to change today! One of my all-time favorite movies that he starred in was the 1950 film Harvey. Let’s dive a little deeper into what made this movie so special to audiences everywhere. If you haven’t ever watched the film Harvey before (which I highly recommend that you do), basically this movie is about how James Stewart’s character seems to have either escaped reality through the form of befriending an imaginary rabbit that stands six feet tall or this bunny (who is named Harvey) is very real and is here to show everyone involved that life…

  • Movie Monday: Gilda (1946)

For the first Movie Monday of 2019, we are starting out with a classic! The film Gilda is one of the most iconic and famous movies in popular culture. The entrance that Rita Hayworth’s character makes in this film is one referenced often, but never really recreated in the same way. You see, Hayworth that something special within her that translated with audience everywhere. It was especially impactful during the difficult World War II years. So let’s get this new year started off with the same amazing entrance that Gilda made! This was the second film I saw with Glenn Ford as a leading character (the first movie I saw…

  • The Best of 2018

Today I would like to share a few of the things that Faintly Familiar readers were kind enough to tell me about. These are all of the different parts that made my readers’ 2018 special. So here we go! This is the best of 2018! Books The books pictured above are a few that Faintly Familiar readers also read in 2018. Not going to lie, Girl, Wash Your Face was everywhere this year and it definitely peaked my interest. However, I never found the time to sit down and actually read it. Maybe 2019 will be the year I read a bit more outside of college classes. Beauty Products For…
