The Fashion of The Mary Tyler Moore Show

One of the most fashionable ladies of the 1970’s is Mary Richards, better known as Mary Tyler Moore! The Mary Tyler Moore Show has been and continues to be one of the most empowering and influential shows for all women who watch it! The stylish looks worn by Mary are still serving as inspiration for fashion designers all around the world. Today, we will be taking a closer look at a few of these outfits and how we can recreate them with a modern edge!

Early in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Mary Richards would wear dresses, sweaters, and turtlenecks with short skirts. Despite living in Minneapolis, Mary somehow found the courage to continue these short dresses in what seemed to be the winter time. She would often wear knee high boots and colorful scarves to balance out what would otherwise be an extremely cold outfit for work.

To create an outfit similar to what Mary Richards wore early in her self titled show, a great choice would be riding boots with a shift dress! Another Mary Richards closet staple that you could add to your ensemble is the peacoat! Layer this coat with a scarf and some gloves, and soon you will be finding yourself rocking an outfit that Mary Richards would have worn herself.

Later in the show, Mary Tyler Moore’s character begin to wear more sleek and streamlined pieces. She ditched the short dresses and pleated skirts and switched her new office attire to the classic power suit! As we watched Mary grow and become more confident throughout the show, we also saw her go out at night more frequently. When Mary wanted to look her best she would put on an elegant black evening gown.

To emulate and modernize these looks, you can never go wrong with a little black dress. Every lady should have one of those in her closet! Another closet necessity for all ladies is a good suit. For a more relaxed look you could wear light wash denim jeans with a chic blazer that would be Mary Richards approved.

With a wardrobe like this, it is no wonder everyone kept telling Mary she would make it after all!

Much Love,

Sarah
