Movie Monday: Bachelor Mother (1939)

Bachelor Mother was Ginger Rogers’ film debut after starring in nine movies with Fred Astaire. Both needed space from one another, and this was Rogers’ answer to the previous roles she had became known for. Of course nerves surrounded the burgeoning actress, however, this film proved that she could certainly hold her own without relying on Astaire as a counterpart.

In addition to the clear success of Bachelor Mother, not many people know that this was not the first version of this film. Back in 1935, a German version was produced called Little Mother. Yet another version of the film was made in 1956, called Bundle of Joy starring Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher.

While Ginger Rogers was aiming to make a name on her own in Hollywood, David Niven took this opportunity to become one of Hollywood’s best leading men. Before Bachelor Mother he was continuously given support roles without ever being given the chance to lead a film. However, Niven more than proved that he could pull off the daunting task of being a leading man in a classic romantic comedy.

The new dream duo of Rogers and Niven was a massive success for RKO and was one of their biggest box-office hits in 1939. Critics overall felt the storyline was ordinary, but the acting and chemistry between the co-stars was what made Bachelor Mother the classic that it is today. Rogers also accomplished her goal of winning over audiences and critics alike.

As for me, the first time I saw Bachelor Mother I was completely enthralled with the whole film. Maybe it is because I am a sucker for a classic Cinderella story or maybe I am just a Ginger Rogers fan who didn’t know it. Whatever it is about this film, it is instantly became one of my favorites! Every time I see this movie on television I make sure I am available to watch it! Rogers and Niven, in my opinion, is one of the most highly underrated dream duos of classic Hollywood.

Much Love,

Sarah

I have never seen this film—think I will whenever I see it listed in the guide but I did see “Bundle of Joy” as I loved Debbie Reynolds’ films.

Yes, I saw Bundle of Joy not too long ago too! It was a good film, but Bachelor Mother still remains one of my favorites. Ginger Rogers did such a good job distancing herself from the person she was with Fred Astaire in their movies together, in my opinion.
