Of all of the runways that have show this Fashion Month so far, the most intriguing of them all for me is the Johnathan Simkhai runway. This wasn’t a collection that will define a fashion era, but, I believe, it will hold some weight when it comes to the trends we will see in 2020.

The overalls vibe I get from this spring 2020 collection is definitely late 1800s early 1900s. If you look back in fashion history, you can see how these two different timelines kind of go along with one another and, ultimately, gave way to each other. Let me separate these two inspirational eras a little bit.

If you look at a few of the fabrics and all of the details, you will notice that these are all elements that were also popular in the Victorian Era. For example, the midnight blue design featured in the image above is crafted out of velvet material. This velvet fabric is a staple of some of the most luxurious designs from the Victorian age. The buttons that line the front of the silk dress also shown above is another example of the kind of details that were popular in the late 1800s.

When if comes to the early 1900s, I think this Johnathan Simkhai collection leans more in the direction of 1910s and 1920s. Don’t think flapper girl, think Mary from Downton Abbey. The silky fabrics used on this runway is definitely something that was worn a lot during that time because it gave women the slim shape they wanted. With that being said, I want to draw your attention to the fit of these designs. Instead of being structured or flowing, the collection has the tendency to be more just straight like what the fashionistas of the early 1900s wore.

Overall, I think runway was a good showcasing of what is to come. Remember me when you see more of these trends coming to light in 2020. You hear it hear first, the Victorian and early 1900s era is making a fashionable comeback.

Much Love,

Sarah
