Fashion Forecast,  What I'm Wearing

80s Inspiration & Structured Sleeves

There’s a lot to love about the 80s, but the first thing to pop into your mind is probably not the clothing. When people think of this decade they usually categorize the clothing as neon, sweatbands, and a ton of shoulder pads. However, there are a lot of style cues that are being picked up bu the fashion industry in our modern era from the structure of 80s clothing.

The first of many things have been the neon trend that has taken over fashion for quite some time now. If you have been reading Faintly Familiar over the past year of its existence, then you know I was way ahead of predicting this trend. However, we are seeing it begin to fade more now and other 80s style elements are rising quickly to replace the spot of where neon used to be.

We are seeing the rise of the structured sleeve take over not only the runways, but also some of the most influential fashionistas who have been attending these fashion shows. I love seeing street style photos of the people attending runways all Fashion Month long, and this is one rising trend I have certainly noticed!

In the spirit of all of this, I have embraced the future trend that I think will extend well into 2020! The fabulous neon top I am wearing may lean into the clichés of the 80s, however, it also adds that modern touch by not coming across like I found it in the attic or something. What it all comes down to is the material you are wearing. The top I have pictured above has a loose and soft fabric that looks less stiff than what was actually in the 80s.

What really excited me about this top is the strutted sleeves! I have always been a sucker for shoulder pads and broad looking shoulders in fashion. However, what is nice about this look is that it doesn’t take the shoulders a step over the line. Sure, shoulder pads and structured sleeves can be taken too far and easily become cheesy. But I would have to insist that this look isn’t truly unflattering on anyone and there is definitely a happy medium that can be reach to still look chic!

Anyway, as you may be able to tell, I am excited about this future trend in fashion. This structured sleeve look is only amplified by fabulous cat eye sunglasses! Consider this not only your newest Fashion Forecast, but also a nice little eye on the past!

Much Love,
Sarah
