Met Gala & Camp Style: What It Is & How You Can Wear It

If you don’t know yet, the annual Met Gala will be held this three days. This is the biggest night for fashion! There are always a ton of outrageous looks that celebrities pull together, and some really fantastic designers get their evening to shine and experiment with different ideas.

Typically, a fashion enthusiast like myself would put together a neat little list of my favorite looks and the ones I didn’t like. But I am much more interested in the theme of Met Gala than anything that will be worn. So, today I am going to talk about what the Met Gala 2019 theme is and share a few of my thoughts on it.

As you can see in the photo above, camp is quite different than what we are used to seeing at Met Gala. Basically, whatever you may think of as too much is just right for camp style. Think over-the-top and impractical, and you have the perfect camp outfit! With each louder and more unusual piece the more in style you are with this theme.

The camp look for ladies unusually features impractical and everyday sort of objects/patterns being used to create an outfit. With men’s style, camp is often used to mix up the average suit or business casual look. Whatever you wear, the camp aesthetic requires bright colors and crazy prints.

Although this style is exciting, it is vastly different than what I am more inclined to wear. So, this required me to do a little research and I found that camp has been widely popularized by television, films, and theatre. One fact I found very interesting was that the film The Gang’s All Here (1943) is a widely cited example of the camp aesthetic. This surprised me because I had never heard of that movie before and also because I never knew that camp existed all the way back in the 1940’s! You can see how dramatic and over the top the costumes are in that film just by looking at the still photos from the film and in the images above.

In my opinion, camp is not very practical. It is most certainly not my style, but as it works its way into more mainstream fashion maybe it will become a little more tame so I can try out a piece or two. As for the 2019 Met Gala, you can definitely expect some really unbelievable looks!

If you are reading this article and you want to give the camp aesthetic a try, all you have to do is find something colorful and bright. The spring neon trend would be a great place to start! Add a lot of color to your wardrobe, and once you feel comfortable with that begin putting together large statement accessories. Fran Fine from The Nanny is a great starting point for implementing the camp aesthetic into more everyday fashion! Anything with an element of realism will go perfectly with the camp style!

I hope this article helped in understanding a little bit more about what the camp aesthetic is and how it relates to fashion. While writing this piece, I know I learned a ton and now I feel very prepared for the 2019 Met Gala! Happy trails to all the style watchers!

Much Love,

Sarah

I tell my oldest daughter she was named Miranda for Carmen Miranda. I loved those 20th Century Fox Musicals which co-starred Carmen Miranda…especially “The Gang’s All Here” with her “tootie-frootie hat!”

That is so cool! I haven’t seen nearly enough of the 20th Century Fox Musicals. It was so surprising to me that modern fashion like Met Gala is still being influenced by the musicals and films created in the 1940’s. It will be interesting to see if anyone on the red carpet tries to recreate the “tootie-frootie hat” from “The Gang’s All Here”!
