Celine Spring 2020
There have been many runways this Fashion Month that have served up some retro inspiration, however, I would say that this Celine spring 2020 collection is the most retro driven. Along with the blast from the past, Celine also seems to take a distinctly street style path with this entire collection and refrains from going towards any couture looks. All of this adds up to a very interesting runway, and one that definitely deserves a little dissecting.
Overall, I would say that Celine is overwhelmingly pushing the 70s vibes with this collection. I don’t saying pushing to be mean, but I do say it because I do not see hints of any other time era being used with these designs. Therefore, the 70s angle is the chosen route and since that is such a popular choice of style inspiration Celine really had to sell their take on the decade.
Personally, I really like how Celine mixed all of the best design elements of the 70s like well fitting blazers, the perfect wash of denim jeans, and aviator sunglasses that can make anyone look cool and mysterious. However, I do feel like a major drawback of this entire runway is the fact that I could probably piece together similar looks as to what the models are wearing by simply using clothing that is already available.
What was really striking with the Celine spring 2020 runway was the lack of frocks. Okay, that sounds a little odd I must admit, but hear me out. In several other collections we saw a lot of florals, goofy dresses, and bold shoulder/sleeve designs. However, Celine swerves around that entire concept for spring and dives right into fashion you can wear year round. The ease of wearing this collection is one of my favorite elements.
I do want to quickly note that we saw another really cool trend that make a splash in spring 2020 that has been a consistent theme. Although it did not appear much here in the Celine runway, the long faux fur or fuzzy looking vest/coat will be a trend to look out for in the spring 2020 season. The Mui Mui spring 2020 collection embraced this design much more, and you can read my thoughts on it over in the review I did on that collection.
Obviously, I do not feel like Celine did a terrible or anything, but I do feel like there is a little less pizzaz than maybe what I have become accustomed to with other fashion houses. Maybe I am being too harsh or maybe I am judging this one fairly. This runway was a lukewarm collection in my book. Good enough to analyze and take several looks as, but not good enough for me to be persuaded to think that Celine was rocking the fashion world. However, I do feel a little more inspired to wear my aviators the next time I see the sun peak out from behind the clouds.
Much Love,
Sarah
