If there is one takeaway from this entire Fashion Month, it is that retro is going to be the flavor of spring 2020! In last week’s Look Book post “80s Inspiration & Structured Sleeves“, I keyed in on this fashion concept. Although a lot of these looks will be a hot and heavy trend for spring 2020, I have seen hints of it even now in the fall.

The most important fashion trend for spring 2020 will be structured shoulders. This is influenced by a mixture of time eras like the Victorian era, the 40s, and the 80s. Of course, we all remember that shoulder pads were an fashion item that stood out of the 80s. However, I feel like we are taking the look of shoulder pads back from that time era and we are renowning them now.

Just look at this Versace spring 2020 collection. This is a great example of how important this trend will be not only in the springtime, but for what I would say the entire 20s decade. Don’t downplay this trend as a seasonal element. I believe we have seen enough of this style across several runways to say that it will be a fun style to play with during the 2020s.

The confidence and power that radiates from this kind of silhouette in fashion is why I love both the 40s and 80s retro look. Shoulder pads can be found as a wardrobe essential in both of these decades, however, we will not be using shoulder pads specifically for this new trend. We are seeing the bold shoulders come from the structure of each design instead of an artificial element like shoulder pads. It really all comes down to fabric and design.

Versace nailed it with this runway, in my opinion! I love the bold shoulders and strong sleeves look. I think Versace was able to mix high-end looks with more casual looks (see cropped denim jacket outfits) and this brand somehow made both work. It is not easy to keep a concept consistent across several different designs, but it is even more difficult to do that when you are reinventing a retro style. Versace is never to be underestimated and this runways is a good example as to why they shouldn’t be.

As I see the collections for spring 2020, I am getting really excited for the direction that I see fashion going. There are so many styles that I love coming back and being modernized for the next decade of fashion. Versace is successfully getting ahead of the curve with this runway and they are setting the tone for the next decade of fashion.

Much Love,

Sarah
