Oh the Many Scarves of Winter
If you have been reading Faintly Familiar for some time now, you know that winter fashion and all of its accessories have become one of my favorite times of the year to get all dressed up (despite the weather)! I say the more layers, the more fashion! Today I want to share a few of my favorite scarves that have been in heavy use this season! This long Steve Madden scarf is so easy to wrap around a cute sweater like this winter print one. It adds just that much more warmth and has become the perfect complement to any outfit. I also love this long scarf because of the…

The Sherpa Jacket
Sherpa has officially taken over the winter months as the fabric of the season! I have previously shared how sherpa pullovers have been my go-to top to stay warm during these cold days. Now I want to tell you guys about this cute sherpa jacket that I found (and love). I feel like this jacket could even be worn on the crisp, early mornings of spring. You see, the best part of this simple zip up is the texture. Unlike most other sherpa pieces, this particular jacket is the perfect mix of warm and cool. I also think the hallow circle zipper is a great little touch of something retro.…

Michael Kors Fall 2019
I’m going to be honest here. This collection from Michael Kors was unlike anything we had ever seen from him before. Normally, Kors keeps it pretty simple, sleek, and clean. This collection saw a complete 180, and what his unique sense of retro was. This New York Fashion Week provided a lot of modern takes on retro which is fun and also sometimes a little distracting. Although you all know I love a good throwback, I felt like this particular collection was a bit messy. The overuse of mixing prints and just how loud some of them were really made this collection feel heavy. Now, there is nothing wrong in…

Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2019 Ready-to-Wear Collection
Of all of the collections that were shown at New York Fashion Week, Ralph Lauren’s may be the most sophisticated one of all. The set signed what like a little world of its own. It was a very aesthetically pleasing collection filled with a timeless color pallet. However wonder the set and most of these designs were, for a ready-to-wear collection there were only truly a few of these designs that were read for a night on the town or a day in the office. The evening gowns, jumpsuits, and a couple of suits were definitely ready for some real life action. But the majority of these looks were not…

Kate Spade Fall 2019
Kate Spade does it again! It is easy to see the fall 2019 runway collection that was shown at New York Fashion Week took huge inspiration from the spring/summer collection that was shown last year. The fashion stands out and somehow also pays tribute to style of eras gone by. The 1960’s vibes are strong with the head scarf and the lightly flared pant designs. I love the look or straight down and flared pants. This retro look is something I have been championing since the beginning of Faintly Familiar and one I will probably always wear even when the runways decide to ditch the look. A lot of fall…

Oui, Oui, & Merci!
I struggled to think of a cute and fitting title for this particular post, but I never struggle in the morning to pick this sweater! France has an undeniable history with fashion and they have always been highly influential on what women of that time were wearing. That is what makes this top so perfect for paying homage to that long, varied history. Although I have never been to France (let alone somewhere as fabulous as Paris), I like to think that wearing this top helps to give my wardrobe that timeless French flair. Not only is it a nice tip of the hat to fashion history, it also has…

My Night in the Press Box
In the last almost four semesters that I have been studying at the University of Illinois one of the most important things that I have learned is to take chances. Now, I am not telling you to get too risky or to start breaking laws. I am just simply saying that when the opportunity to try a new food or visit a new place presents itself you should take it. This semester I am expanding my own horizons by taking two journalism classes, and the writer in me is loving it! For my Journalism 210 class I had the awesome opportunity of getting to experience spend a night covering an…

Laura Petrie’s Revolutionary Style
It is hard to imagine a world where it isn’t normal for women to have the right to wear pants, but that was what the world was like back when the Dick Van Dyke Show debuted in 1961. I have talked about the Mary Tyler Moore’s fashion on her self title show from the 70’s, but I have yet to discuss how groundbreaking her style from the Dick Van Dyke Show was. Today that is all going to change! Let’s take a close look at what made Laura Petrie so influential on women’s style! Besides being absolutely hilarious and the perfect comedic complement to Dick Van Dyke, Laura Petrie never…

How to Add a Little Spring Into Your Winter Wardrobe
I think we can all agree that January can feel a little dreary every once in a while. Between cabin fever and all of the cold weather (depending on your location – if you live near the beach I envy you), it can feel like this whole winter thing may never end. Well, I am here to say there is a better way to create a little reprieve! If you have been reading Faintly Familiar for a while now, you already know that neon has been the “it” color trend since the fall of 2018. I wrote about this trend back in the fall, you can read that post here.…

A Classic Black Turtleneck
Is there anything more chic than a black turtle neck? There is a reason this seemingly simple piece of clothing remains within the ever-changing fashion industry as one that everyone finds attractive. Thanks to the incredible Audrey Hepburn we now consider a black turtleneck a closet essential! Over the years, the color black has proven itself to be the only color in fashion that will never truly go out of style. Yes, you may have the color of the year be a peach or emerald, but if you are wearing an all black ensemble you are immediately seen as someone who is “in the know” so to speak. That is…
